Immunology & Rheumatology In the Department of Medicine

Message from the Chief

The Division of Rheumatology is dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in the care of patients with autoimmune rheumatological diseases. Today, an estimated 46 million people in the United States are affected by arthritis or other rheumatic conditions. By the year 2020, this number is expected to reach 60 million.

The division of rheumatology is driven by 11 primary faculty members and has more than 20 affiliate faculty members who care for patients at three hospital sites.  Faculty research focuses on an interdisciplinary approach that ranges from molecular biology, through cell biology of immune responses, to clinical rheumatology and epidemiology.

Trainees in the division benefit from this interdisciplinary approach, have access to state-of-the-art research facilities, and extensive exposure to current theory and clinical practice. Our clinician scientists have also implemented a program of education and research to train a new generation of translational and clinical research investigators in the development of innovative therapies for rheumatic diseases.

A principal objective of the Divisional training program is to help clinical rheumatology trainees to become independent clinical investigators, and to pursue long-term careers in academic medicine. In addition, numerous fellows are actively engaged in translational clinical immunological research. Trainees are encouraged to participate in weekly Rheumatology Grand Rounds, which are designed for the presentation and discussion of interesting or complex cases from the outpatient clinics or in-patient consultation services. Whenever possible, patients with interesting clinical findings are invited to attend these conferences.

The Division is considered as one of the leaders in the School of Medicine, in cutting edge bench research, clinical trial investigation, and outcomes assessment research.

We encourage you to learn more about our Division through our website.
